Helping Others
Please get today's issue of New Straits Times if you haven't already. Below is the article I wrote in my column. :)
Everyone needs a little help now and then, and there is no better feeling than to know that you made someone feel better. They say that everything starts from the home, and that is very true. If you’ve got younger siblings, you could try helping them out with their homework, and spending time to bond with them. After all, family is the most important thing.
Outside of home, you could always volunteer at your local orphanage or RSPCA, especially if you have a lot of free time. There are a lot of people who like making arts and crafts, and if you’re one of them, you could try your hand at making bookmarks with positive messages and leaving them around for others to find. If you’re a busy bee, however, there are equally as many things that you could do to brighten a person’s day. There is no better way to start than with a simple smile to a friend or a stranger. You would be surprised at how much that would do for them, particularly if they’ve been having a bad day.
For those of you who want to help out in a different way, you could participate in Pay It Forward Day. It is when you pay for someone else’s bill. It could be for a meal, some books, or anything else. The next Pay It Forward Day will occur on the 28th of April, but why confine good deeds to a day a year? You could do it anytime you feel like you should. The goal here is to create the ripple effect and cause the person you help to do something nice for someone else, too.
There are a lot of people in the world with not enough to fill their stomachs who would really appreciate a meal. I’m sure that a lot of you have some food vouchers that you know you aren’t going to use lying around, and at least a little spare change. How about donating that to someone who might need it? That could really put a smile on their face.
I really hope that you will take some of these ideas with you and come up with a few more of your own to bring up the spirits of others. Seeing others smile because of you will make you smile even more.
