Not Every Person For Themselves

May 3, 2012 in , , ,

People are becoming more self-centered, whether on purpose or sub-consciously, as time goes on, forcing us to learn sooner or later that it’s every man for himself. We have to help ourselves before others can help us, and we have to stand up for ourselves — for what we believe in — before we can expect others to do so. No other person will fight our battles for us if we don’t.

Yes, it’s great to be independent and not have to rely on others, but don’t forget that everyone needs help at times, even in the best of times. It’s okay to ask for a hand when you’re overwhelmed, and as long as you ask nicely, the chances are that people will be more than willing to help out. It might seem like a good thing to take everything upon yourself, but it really isn’t. It’s also unhealthy since the stress wears you out. It’s better to share the load and the credit to do a great job instead of shouldering too many things that don’t turn out as well as they could have.

While you work with others, and during other times, do offer help to those you think could use it. Even a little help will be greatly appreciated and will make you feel good about yourself. We are all part of a larger family and should lend a hand to our brothers and sisters. It feels great to have friends we can always count on, and likewise, it’s good to be that friend. It is a way to share love — to bring some good into the world.

So even though we have to fend for ourselves in the end, don’t be afraid to accept help and be willing to give it. The world is changing, but the humanity in us should remain the same, and we should still have in us the quality to help others. It doesn’t have to be every man for himself in everything.
